What is allergy?
An allergy is when the body’s immune system over-reacts to something that is harmless to most people. The substance is known as an allergen. Common allergens include pollen, animal hair, house dust mite, certain foods and medicines.
The reaction can range from mild symptoms, like sneezing or itchy eyes, up to anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening reaction affecting the whole body including skin rash, breathing difficulties and collapse.
Allergies are becoming increasingly common, especially hay-fever and food allergies. They are often also associated with having eczema and asthma. Having an allergy can really impact negatively on your life, but managing your allergy the right way can make a big difference.

Specific-IgE testing can help to assess if you may be allergic to something. Various types are available: we use one called ALEX-2.
