Injection therapies
Joint Care offers injection therapies that can be specifically targeted at the area of concern using ultrasound guidance.
Cortisone
Cortisone injections have an anti-inflammatory effect and can be used to treat persistently inflamed joints or soft tissues. When undertaken with ultrasound guidance, studies have shown that this can give a better response to the initial injection and is less painful.
Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the fluid within your joints. Hyaluronic acid injections are a safe way to help lubricate the painful joint and relieve pain after only a few days. They are mainly used for arthritis of the joints, particularly when patients want to avoid or delay surgical treatment. Hyaluronic acid is administered as a course of three injections, each separated by one to three weeks. The benefits can last up to six months; if effective, patients can have repeated courses.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PRP is an incredibly safe and effective treatment using the patient's blood to accelerate healing. PRP consists of two elements: plasma, the liquid portion of blood, and platelets, a type of blood cell that plays a vital role in healing the body. Platelets contain growth factors that trigger cell reproduction and stimulate tissue regeneration. PRP is simply blood that contains more platelets than usual.
PRP is created by taking a small blood sample and placed into a centrifuge device. The centrifuge rapidly spins the blood sample, separating the platelets and concentrating them within the plasma.
PRP can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, including osteoarthritis and tendon, ligament, muscle, and joint injuries. It has become increasingly popular because of its safety profile and minimal side effects, particularly among elite athletes.
Three PRP injections over six weeks achieve the best results. Ultrasound-guided injections help to ensure the PRP is directly in the area of need.
Joint Care offers both diagnostic ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injections.
